It is 1776 and Nathan Hale has been captured by the British for spying on Long Island from where the Americans have just been routed.  In the hours leading up to his execution, he is interviewed by Captain John Montressor who seeks to understand what would drive men to rebellion against the most advanced and civilized nation in the world. Trough the eyes of these two men the play examines the idealistic underpinnings of the founding of America as a way of probing its terrible flaws and its wondrous virtues. Both points of view – cynic and idealist are necessary to understand who we are as a nation.
